Master suite systems
A master suite system is a security and access control method that uses a hierarchical set of keys to open multiple locks. A single master key can open all designated doors, while individual “differ” keys only open specific locks, and “sub-master” keys can open a group of locks on a specific floor or in a specific department. These systems offer convenience for managing access across properties like offices, schools, or apartment buildings.
Key components and levels of access
- Master Key: Opens all doors within the system, granting the highest level of access.
- Sub-Master Key: Opens all doors in a specific area, such as a single floor or department.
- Differ/Servant Key: Opens only a single, designated door (e.g., a classroom or individual apartment).
- Keyed Alike: A system where multiple locks are opened by the same key, but these locks are still part of a larger master suite (e.g., a set of locks for all storage closets).
Types of systems
- Mechanical Master Key Systems: Traditional systems that rely on the physical configuration of the lock cylinders to manage access.
- Restricted vs. Non-Restricted: A restricted system has patent protection, meaning unauthorized key copies cannot be made.
- A non-restricted system offers the convenience of a master key but does not have restrictions on who can get duplicate keys cut.
